Bird species attracted: The birds using your nestbox depend on its type. Traditional nestboxes with 25mm, 28mm, and 32mm holes attract Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Great Tit, Tree Sparrow, and House Sparrow respectively.
Open-fronted nestboxes: Blackbirds, Robins, and Wrens may use open-fronted nestboxes. Blackbirds prefer mostly open fronts, Robins are fine with partially open fronts, and Wrens use more enclosed ones.
Specialist nestboxes: There are specialized nestboxes for Treecreeper, Jackdaw, Barn Owl, Kestrel, Grey Wagtail, Dipper, Swallow, House Martin, and Swift.
Mounting height: For nestboxes with holes, place them 2-4m above the ground to prevent predators. Open-fronted nestboxes should be lower than 2m amid dense vegetation away from predators.
Attaching to trees: Avoid damaging the tree when attaching the nestbox. Use a wire strap wrapped around the tree instead of drilling or nailing.
Monitoring nestbox use: To check if a nestbox is being used, observe from a distance. Opening the box may cause abandonment. Never remove nestboxes during the breeding season (March to September).
Best time for installation: March is ideal, but putting up nestboxes well in advance of spring increases the chances of them being used.
