Live 95’s Aislinn Kelly sat down with Minister Eamon Ryan at the Department of Transport in Dublin to learn about the big switch we need to make and his vision for Ireland’s future.
Some of Ireland’s climate action plans to reduce carbon emissions by 51% 2030…
- It is aimed to increase the proportion of electricity by 80% by 2030, with a target of 5 gigawatts of offshore wind.
- Farmers, businesses and communities are hoped to generate their own electricity and feed back into the grid with the introduction of a small-scale generation scheme
- Transport emissions are aimed to be reduced, with a target of 500,000 extra people walking, cycling and taking public transport journeys per day by 2030
- The National Retrofit plan will increase demand for retrofitting to reduce emissions from properties and reduce energy use
- The food sector is to become more carbon efficient, with a reduction in chemical nitrogen through a more targeted use of fertiliser and multi-species swards, like Minister Ryan mentioned, will be encouraged.
- Green teams are to be established in every public sector body, as it is aimed t o lead by example and embrace decarbonising technology.
- No new fossil fuel heating systems will be installed in public buildings after 2023, only in exceptional circumstances.
- All new fleet purchases will be electric from 2023 if possible.
