Week 29 The Deposit Return Scheme
In this episode Max visits Lidl Ireland HQ to speak with Elaine O’Connor, Head of Sustainability about Re-turn, the National Deposit Return Scheme.
Currently over 60% of bottles and cans are being recycled across the country. This means that over 30% are going into landfill or ending up as litter.
Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme is due to launch on 1st February as part of a circular economy initiative aimed at increasing recycling and reducing litter and waste.
It is hoped that placing a value on the containers will incentivise their return.
How does it work?
- Cans and bottles (150mls to 3litres) will be branded with a Re-turn logo.
- A deposit is paid at the till.
- The deposit will be paid back upon return of the packaging.
- You can return your empty, undamaged container to any retailer regardless of where you purchased it.
- Returns can be made via reverse vending machines (RVMs) or over the counter.
- Get your deposit refund in full or use the deposit for future purchases.
