Did You Know:
- The Gearagh just outside Macroom in Cork is one of four inland river deltas in the world. The others are in Ecuador, Botswana and Czech Republic.
- The Geargh dates back to ice age.
- It’s a place of unique landscape, biodiversity and ecological importance.
- There are over 200 tree and plant species like marsh marigold and nightshade there.
- It’s also home to rare wildlife in the summer and winter from Greylag geese, Atlantic salmon and the endangered freshwater pearl mussels.
- Calls are mounting for it to be protected and to become Ireland’s seventh national park.
- During the 1950’s some of its biodiversity was removed, including ancient oak trees which were over 1000 years old. These were cut to facilitate hydro electricity.
- River deltas are very rare in the world, to introduce it would see it’s protection but also promotion for eco tourism.
