New research this month revealed that 4 in 10 online shoppers intend to complete their Christmas gifts and non-food shopping over the coming weekend.

Consumers in Ireland will spend about €5-billion-euro this Christmas, so keeping a decent proportion of this huge spend within the local economy will create wealth here, rather than supporting economies further afield.

An online shopping study conducted by Deloitte found shopping online leads to five times more returned products, which considerably increases the environmental impact. An extensive literature search performed for the study shows that approximately 40% of online purchases are returned versus 7% in the case of brick-and-mortar.
