Did you know?
- The Gearagh river delta is one of only a handful of inland river deltas in the world- they are typically found where the river meets the sea. Other inland deltas can be found at the Okavongo basin in Botswana, the Danube along the Hungarian-Slovakian border, and the Sistan river in Iran.
- Ireland currently has six national parks: Glenveagh, Wild Nephin, Connemara, the Burren, the Wicklow Mountains, and Killarney.
- Inland deltas are a significant source of eco-tourism for their local areas, as a result of the rare nature of the structure, and the wildlife that typically inhabits them. The Okavango delta in Botswana for instance is a major part of the countries burgeoning eco-tourist industry, which accounts for 2-4% of the country’s GDP.
