Did you know?

* A wetland is a place that has been wet enough for a long enough time to develop specially adapted vegetation and other organisms (Maltby 1986).

A wetland occurs where the water table is at or near the surface of the land, or where the land is covered by a layer of shallow water, for some or all of the year.

* “Water is not a commercial product like any other but, rather, a heritage which must be protected defended and treated as such.” That statement is the opening line of the Water Framework Directive. It is a guiding principle for LAWPRO and underpins the value of water.

* The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) is a national shared service working on behalf of all 31 local authorities in Ireland. They coordinate efforts to achieve good or high water quality in our rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal waters, and groundwater, as required by the European Union Water Framework Directive.

* Healthy rivers and catchments support a healthy environment, a robust economy, our health, and wellbeing.
