The Office of Public Works or OPW is responsible for managing and maintaining Ireland’s most important historic buildings and heritage sites including the medieval friary in Ennis.

The OPW has published its own Biodiversity Action Strategy with the aim of protecting, promoting and enhancing biodiversity across its  operations.

Tips:

* If you want to devote an area of your land or garden to biodiversity, there will be very little if any work required. Allow the designated area flourish naturally.

* If people ask why an area is overgrown or apparently unkept, be sure to explain why and the benefits of doing so.

* Post a small sign outlining why an areas is being allowed to grow naturally. This will inform people what you are doing and they may do the same.

* There is no need to plant grass or any other seeds. Allow an area to flourish naturally and unassisted.
