Did You Know:
- Irish people waste an average of €700 a year on food waste.
- Throwing out food is expensive, paying to buy it, refrigerate it, cook it and paying for waste charges.
- Compost is bacteria, fungi and creatures doing the work. The creatures need food, moisture and oxygen
- Avoid meat, fish or dairy as they are dense and can attract rodents.
- Other foods work better like garden waste, food.
- Autumn leaves should be left on the ground, these are important for wildlife during autumn and winter. They provide camouflage and shelter for insects and birds use them for food source.
- Green materials are the soft wet materials you need, fruit and veg waste.
- Brown materials are wood like material, sawdust, twigs, cardboard, leaves, straw and hay. These balance the wet materials.
What You Can Do:
- To reduce food waste first become aware of food you’re wasting – so reduce this. Secondly with scraps you have, create compost.
- Start up with a plastic compost bin, chicken wire or pallets at home. Try to get living creatures to work for you.
- If people can’t compost at home, donate their waste to neighbours who do have a compost system.
- Invest in a brown bin.
