This week, East Coast FM looked at Bees
Did you know…
- There are 100 bee species in Ireland, including honeybees and more species
- One third of Ireland’s bees are in danger of extinction
- The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is a strategy to address population decline of bees
How do bees impact the environment and me?
- Bees are the most important pollinators in Ireland, especially for crops and plants
- Bees and their wellbeing can be indicators of the good or bad state of biodiversity in a given environment
- Bees are vital contributors to the economy since they pollinate a variety of crops
What are some ways I can protect and help bees?
- When gardening, allow for the growth of wildflowers to be pollinated by bees
- Make a bee box out of reclaimed materials to create safe habitats
- Reduce your use of pesticides that would kill bees and other beneficial insects
