This week Highland Radio spoke to Ross McGill from Loughs Agency & Sean Toland from the Inishowen Rivers Trust.
Did you know?
NorTrack:
Loughs Agency are leading NorTrack, a €1.6 million european project surrounding the tracking of aquatic animals. (Loughs Agency)
This is called Telemetry > Acoustic Telemetry – how it works and why it’s useful (youtube.com)
The NorTrack technology will be able to determine survival rates of species, track movements and see where species are being lost (it can even tell when a fish has been eaten!) (Loughs Agency)
Tuilte:
The Inishowen River Trust has taken part in a TG4 Documentary to Air on Wednesday the 21st of February at 9:30pm. If you missed it you can watch it HERE.
Short duration, high intensity rainfall is becoming more prevalent in Ireland and coastal counties including Donegal, and it causes the issue of flooding. (Mét Eireann)
Why it’s important!
NorTrack:
Irish Native Species such as Wild Atlantic Salmon and European eel that are at risk of disappearing are of interest in the NorTrack project. More data on these species means more can be done in terms of conservation.
Tuilte:
Human activity is a leading cause of flooding.
The more drainage that is put in upstream (human activity), the more flooding that happens downstream where towns and villages are.
Inishowen Rivers Trust are doing a Natural Drainage Project in the town of Clonmany, in a bid to use nature based solutions for flooding (IRT).
They are using Leaky Dams (youtube.com) .
