This week’s episode is all about the consumer’s right to have their electronic or electrical goods repaired. Journalist Sarah Coleman spoke to Deirdre Clune MEP in Strasbourg to discuss the draft legislation that requires sellers to repair products cheaper than they replace them, and to provide rights to make repairs both easier and cheaper when guarantees expire.
This is part of a EU achievement of its Green Deal policy agenda to promote longer product life reusability and repairability.
About the legislation…
- The aim of this legislation is to enhance right to repair rules to reduce waste and offer greater repair options for customers
- The draft legislation will let consumers choose to repair rather than buy, even after the warranty of a product expires.
- The rules will make sellers prioritise repair during statutory warranty period if it is cheaper or equal in cost to replace a product
- The legislation also aims to extend the legal guarantee for one year after a product has been repaired .
- The draft legislation proposes setting up digital platforms to help buyers find someone who can repair their item in their locality.
