This week Midwest Radio looked at the new re-turn scheme coming into effect from the first of February.
Did you know…?
- Only 60% of plastic bottles and cans are being collected for recycling through green bins, therefore over 30% are not collected and are instead being littered.
- The management and operation of the re-turn scheme does not cost the public or government any money. The system is funded through producer fees for each product placed on the market.
- You will have the choice to receive your refund against a store-bought purchase or in cash.
Why is recycling in Ireland so important?
- Local Empowerment: Recycling is one of the most effective actions we can take as individuals and communities to tackle climate change and we all benefit from the results.
- Circular Economy: The scheme aims to move away from the “take, make, and dispose” culture that we have adopted over the last 50 years and instead encourages us to return valuable materials so we can reuse them.
- Protects Ecosystems and Wildlife: By recycling, we reduce damage to the natural world, protecting ecosystems and wildlife.
What can I do to help the environment through the means of recycling?
- Deposit your bottles at a re-turn booth: Rather than littering and damaging our environment, return your bottles and get your 15c/25c back.
- Spread Awareness: Promote this and other recycling initiatives to attract more users.
- Clean/dry recycling: When placing things in your recycling bin, ensure that they are clean and dry as otherwise all the contents of the bin will be contaminated and unusable.
