Did you know…
-
- The oldest Irish tree, known as the ‘Silken Thomas Tree’ is a yew tree that is approximately 800 years old and can be found in Maynooth.
- Trees have the ability to remember past events and can adapt their behaviour appropriately. For example, closing their leaves during droughts to conserve water.
- The tallest tree in Ireland is a ‘Douglas Fir’ located in Co. Wicklow. The tree is 61.5m tall, towering above famous world landmarks such as the Niagara Falls!
Why is the planting of trees in Ireland important?
- Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with oxygen. As long as the tree lives, the carbon remains trapped in the tree.
- Cover provided by leaf canopies of trees, slows rain falling onto the ground. This minimises the effects of soil erosion that will strip the soil of its nutrients and moisture.
- Trees provide a habitat for wildlife such as birds, squirrels and other woodland creatures.
What can I do to help with tree planting and restoration?
- Donate to one of the many organisations working to plant and restore trees in Ireland. Eg. Crann.ie, Irish Trees.
- Volunteer or join an organisation focused on restoring Irish trees and learn more about the importance of trees in the environment.
- Organise tree planting events within your community to promote the planting and restoration of trees.
