This week on Ours to Protect we’re taking a look at a project to grow native trees that’s being rolled out in 35 primary schools across Kerry. From September almost a thousand children will learn how to grow their own oak trees from acorns gathered locally.
The project is the brain child of Local Roots, a mid-Kerry voluntary group, that propagates native trees from seed and helps provide the manpower to plant them.
A pilot project was run in 4 primary schools last year and the 4th class students of Scoil Réalt na Mara in Cromane were the among the first children in Kerry to grow oak trees from acorns.
