Ours to Protect is back for a second year! Ours to Protect is a collaboration between Radio Kerry and the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland aiming to champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Kerry about how they can make a difference. Programmes will air every second Thursday morning from May 2025 until the end of October.

Ours to Protect is brought to you by Radio Kerry, the IBI and funded by Coimisiún na Meán with the Television Licence Fee. For more information check out www.ourstoprotect.ie. Find your ecological footprint at footprintcalculator.org

This year, Ours to Protect is focusing on youth voices. We will be visiting schools and community groups from around the county, answering their environmental concerns and seeing the work that they are doing to help the environment.

This week we visited the fifth-class students of Scoil Realta na Maidine in Listowel, who have been carrying our extensive biodiversity work around their school over the last three years. We discuss the importance of growing native plants, trees, and vegetables and why “no mow zones” are key in ensuring our native wildlife thrives. We also speak to Alan Balfe, Wildlife and Education Coordinator at Tralee Bay Wetlands, who will be further explaining the importance of projects like the one in Scoil Realta na Maidine.

Special thanks to the students involved with the programme:
