Green Tourism: A sustainable stay at The Strand Hotel
For this week’s episode we look at how the hospitality sector can take action to help the environment by visiting the Limerick Strand Hotel. This four star hotel in Limerick city has adopted a sustainable policy that has resulted in them winning the Eco Label Awards.
The hotel is making an active effort to reduce its carbon footprint and has partnered with Green Tourism, a hospitality specialist environment accreditation. This means the hotel completes audits to help become more environmentally friendly.
Measures The Strand has taken to become more sustainable:
- The hotel has a waste diversion rate of 80% from landfill, as each guest bedroom has recycling cards and bins and all plastic bottles for haircare and body products are refilled.
- EV Charging stations are located onsite to encourage guests to use electric vehicles.
- The hotel prioritises local grown food which helps contribute to a circular economy.
- The Strand has a dedicated “Green Team” from all departments to help have a co-ordinated approach to eco-measures and brainstorm new ideas.
- LED lighting is used throughout the hotel and sensor lighting is used in meeting rooms, stairwells and back of house to avoid unnecessary energy use.
- Guests have eco-friendly cards to give guests the option to reuse towels and bed linen.
- The hotel uses biodegradable take away cups and straws that are composted.
- The kitchen’s oil is sent to a biodiesel plant.
- Boxing and packaging used to bring the food to hotels is recycled by suppliers and reused.
- Electricity gas and water metres are in use in the hotel, to help monitor energy consumption.
