This week’s episode investigated the chemical glyphosate and the future of its use in the EU.
It is the most common herbicide in the world and is currently approved for use in the EU until 15 December 2023. Farming organisations in Europe are looking for it to be renewed due to its role in preventing weeds from destroying their crops. On the other hand, environmental campaigners are worried about the impact the chemical has on ecosystems and human health.
Alan Moore of Hedgerows Ireland described why he believes we should turn to more sustainable options for weed management and Grace O’Sullivan MEP expressed her concerns about the renewal of its use for the next ten years.
What is glyphosate?
- Glyphosate is a synthetic herbicide and was first introduced by the company Monsanto in the 1970s under the brand name Roundup.
- It is one of the most commonly used herbicides, often used by farmers, foresters, landscapers and gardeners to manage weeds.
- It is non-selective which means it can kill a wide range of plant species, including both broadleaf and grassy weeds.
- Monsanto’s patent for glyphosate expired in 2000, leading to the development of generic glyphosate-based herbicides by various manufacturers.
- Glyphosate-resistant genetically modified (GM) crops, often referred to as “Roundup Ready” crops, have been developed to withstand glyphosate application, allowing for easier and more effective weed control in fields of these crops.
- Glyphosate is often used in towns to control weeds along roads and in residential lawns and gardens.
- Glyphosate is subject to regulations and restrictions in many countries to reduce potential environmental and health risks. These regulations include maximum residue limits, buffer zones, and usage guidelines.
